Home Wind Turbines

There are many home wind turbines on the market today. Some of them are a traditional setup, which features a pole , the top of which is mounted with the propeller, drive shaft, gear box, and generator. This heading assembly is mounted on a rotating pedestal, which allows the propeller to be turned to face the wind. This is important, as these generators operate at their best facing into the wind.

The other type of home wind turbines are vertical axis turbines. They are far more exotic, or less familiar looking. These can take almost any form, one popular home style features a simple cylinder with angled metal slots along the outside. No matter which direction the wind strikes this assembly from, it set it to moving. The traditional downside to this setup was that at high rotational velocities, the units would begin to create their own turbulence, which could be noisy and disrupt the potential for power generation within the systems.

Recent advances in home wind turbines have been able to cancel out many of the issues that would cause turbulence. The newer models are highly stable, even at high speeds. The main advantage a vertical axis system has over a traditional system is that it can be mounted much closer to the ground. This allows you to place one anywhere from on your rooftop to in the middle of your back yard. They can be put in place most times without breaking zoning ordinances, which isn’t always the case with taller traditional turbines.
